Discovered: Vintage Look-A-like of First Lady Michelle Obama's Inauguration Outfit!

A vintage look-a-like of the Inaugural outfit worn by First Lady Michelle Obama was discovered in our Re-Runs consignment department in the back of our store.

The two piece yellow brocade outfit with beaded neckline is a spitting image of the stunning ensemble worn by First Lady Michelle Obama at the Presidential Inauguration.

The one-of-a-kind custom made vintage two piece ensemble (sleeveless coat and zipper-backed dress size 4-6) was made to order for the grandmother of one of the boutique's regular customers in 1948.

The owner of the boutique, Lynn Dell, is offering the vintage outfit to a lucky bidder by online auction. Bids, starting at $120.90 (in honor of the January 20th, 2009 Inauguration) can be submitted on the auction's listing at ebay.com. It can be viewed in theWest 72nd Street window(between Broadway and the Columbus Avenue) in New York City's Upper West Side.

Glamour: Some Food for Thought

"The contrast between what is glamorous now and what was glamorous in the days of Cary Grant and Norma Shearer says much about how American society has changed. Glamour used to present an idealized version of adulthood. Now it presents an idealized version of adolescence. In the old days, glamour was all about unattainability, i.e., fantasy projection. These days, it has become unthinkable that a major Hollywood director might echo Cecil B. DeMille, who instructed Edith Head's department at Paramount to make clothes "that make people gasp when they see them. Don't design anything anybody could possibly buy in a store."

Today glamour is tied to the idea of shopping to maintain the illusion that you are (a) kind of famous, or (b) on your way to being famous, or (c) essentially the same as famous people, because you share the same taste in home furnishings, core values and dog shampoo. Some of the stars with whose dog shampoo brand we may be intimately acquainted don't even appear in the movies, or at least not often. They may appear in TV shows that aren't so much TV shows as a chance to observe celebrities in their natural habitats. Which kind of resembles ours. Mainstream magazines have transformed themselves from facilitators of idol worship to guides of glamour consumption."

A Return...to Hats

The days when women (and men) never left the house without a hat are long gone. Hats are no longer de rigeur; they are now associated with uniforms and eccentric English ladies who top their heads with feathery confections at weddings and Ascot.

As the days grow colder, you might jam a fleece something-or-other over your ears to stay warm. But the concept of hat-as-fashion-accessory has been increasingly seen as difficult, or well-nigh impossible, to pull off. Fortunately, hats have been slowly making a re-appearance.

The stand-out on last fall's Proenza Schouler runway was not the gorgeous 1920s-inspired clothes, but the stunning cloche hats designed by Albertus Swanepoel, one of this year's CFDA runners-up. Swanepoel was recently featured, along with his confections, in a New York Times article which suggests that "there has clearly been a resurgence" in the popularity of hats.

The times followed this article with a slideshow of a Fifth Avenue milliner's parade, featuring our very fashionable friend Tziporah Salamon.

On Friday night, we hosted a performance at Off Broadway Boutique. Those of you who were not in attendance may enjoy a recap of the evening’s dazzling events! A warm and lively gathering of guests arrived at 6 o’clock to see Tziporah Salamon perform The Fabric of My Life, “a sartorial autobiography in which she uses stories, anecdotes and costume changes to tell the story of her life in clothes.”

Tziporah’s performance was utterly riveting. She was sensational! She kept our interest with her lively anecdotes and moving remembrances. There was much laughter, and even tears, as her life story progressed. Her fantastic choice of music, which played throughout the performance, acted as a kind of theme song for the modern fashionista: “I am a very stylish girl!” it proclaimed. Throughout all of this, our eyes were glued to Tziporah as she depicted her metamorphosis, from schoolgirl to student to salesgirl to stylist, through various costume changes, each more dazzling than the next.

Tziporah is truly one of a kind; her exotic vintage outfits and signature hats have made her a feature on the New York fashion scene. She stands as an inspiration to all of us, to dress with attitude, with pizzaz, to stand out from the crowd instead of blending in. She reminds us to wear what makes us happy, as in doing so, we elevate the mood of those around us. She is a true Off Broadway Boutique woman.
